Ādi Parva, Adhyāya 115 — Mādri’s request; invocation of the Aśvins; birth and naming of the Pāṇḍavas

व्यक्त कुलान्तकरणो भवितैष सुतस्तव । तस्य शान्ति: परित्यागे गुप्तावपनयों महान्‌,राजन्‌! सब ओर होनेवाले उन भयानक अप-शकुनोंको लक्ष्य करके ब्राह्मणलोग तथा परम बुद्धिमान्‌ विदुरजी इस प्रकार बोले--“नरश्रेष्ठ नरेश्वर! आपके ज्येष्ठ पुत्रके जन्म लेनेपर जिस प्रकार ये भयंकर अपशकुन प्रकट हो रहे हैं, उनसे स्पष्ट जान पड़ता है कि आपका यह पुत्र समूचे कुलका संहार करनेवाला होगा। यदि इसका त्याग कर दिया जाय तो सब विघ्नोंकी शान्ति हो जायगी और यदि इसकी रक्षा की गयी तो आगे चलकर बड़ा भारी उपद्रव खड़ा होगा

Vaiśampāyana uvāca: vyakta-kulānta-karaṇo bhavitaiṣa sutas tava | tasya śāntiḥ parityāge guptāvapanayo mahān, rājan |

Vaiśampāyana nói: “Tâu Đại vương, rõ ràng đứa con này của ngài sẽ trở thành nguyên nhân diệt vong của cả dòng tộc. Nếu bị ruồng bỏ, tai ương sẽ lắng dịu; nhưng nếu được che chở và giữ lại, về sau sẽ dấy lên một cơn biến loạn lớn lao và thảm khốc.”

The verse frames a hard ethical counsel in terms of dharma and public welfare: when a single attachment threatens the destruction of an entire lineage and kingdom, the ruler is urged to choose the lesser harm—abandoning the dangerous cause—to prevent wider catastrophe.

At the birth of the king’s eldest son, terrifying omens appear. Interpreting these signs, counselors (including brāhmaṇas and Vidura in the surrounding passage) warn the king that the child will bring ruin to the dynasty; they advise abandonment as the means to pacify impending disasters, while protection will lead to great future turmoil.
