Chapter 246 — वास्तुलक्षणम्
Characteristics of Building-sites / Vāstu
Lord Agni (teaching the sage Vasiṣṭha in the Agni Purāṇa’s encyclopedic instruction style)

Concept: Bandhu between cosmos (dik-devatā) and built space (vāstu-maṇḍala).
Application: Use correct directional correspondences to harmonize habitation with cosmic order and reduce inauspicious influences.

Primary Rasa: adbhuta
Secondary Rasa: shanta
Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A square vāstu-maṇḍala drawn on the ground with corner (koṇa) pads labeled; priests placing flowers/akṣata while invoking Sāvitra/Savitā, Jaya-Indra in the south-west and Rudra-Vyādhi in the north-west, proceeding diagonally from the east.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala temple mural style, earthy reds and greens, a priestly figure marking a vāstu-maṇḍala grid, corner deities as subtle guardian forms in the SW and NW, palm-leaf manuscript aesthetic, flat iconic composition.","tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting, gold-leaf highlights on the vāstu-maṇḍala border, corner deities seated as dik/koṇa guardians, ritual items (kalasha, flowers), rich jewel tones, symmetrical sacred geometry.","mysore_prompt":"Mysore painting style, clean linework showing the maṇḍala grid with labeled corners, small deity vignettes for SW and NW, instructional diagram feel with delicate shading.","mughal_miniature_prompt":"Mughal miniature, detailed courtyard scene of architects and priests around a drawn grid, calligraphic labels for Nairṛta and Vāyavya, refined textiles and instruments, precise geometry."}
Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"instructional","suggested_raga":"Bhairav","pace":"medium","voice_tone":"instructional"}
Sandhi Resolution Notes: Resolved: sāvitraś→sāvitraḥ; 'mbudhau→ambudhau; nairṛte 'mbudhau split; rudravyādhī treated as dvandva dual; pūrvādau taken as pūrva+ādi (tatpuruṣa); letter-names ja/ga/gha treated as avyaya labels; advahiḥ read from advahiḥ (text has advahiḥ/advahiḥ uncertainty).
Related Themes: Agni Purana 246 (Vāstu-maṇḍala devatā-nyāsa context)
It gives Vāstu-vidyā instructions for assigning specific deities/personifications to the south-west (nairṛta) and north-west (vāyavya) zones of the Vāstu-maṇḍala, following a corner/diagonal sequence beginning from the east.
Beyond theology, it preserves applied architectural-ritual knowledge (Vāstu-śāstra): the systematic mapping of divine forces onto spatial grids used for house/temple planning and consecration.
Correctly installing directional deities in the proper zones is treated as harmonizing the site with cosmic order (ṛta), reducing inauspicious influences (such as ‘Vyādhi’) and supporting auspiciousness and stability in the dwelling or temple.
