viṣeṇa ca mṛtā vai ye ye vai śṛṃgibhirāhatāḥ | kṛtaghnāśca gurughnāśca ye ca mitradruhastathā
Skanda (deduced: Kāśīkhaṇḍa commonly Skanda → Agastya)
Tirtha: Kāśī-kṣetra (Gaṅgā-tīra)
Type: kshetra
Scene: A somber enumeration of sinners and those who died by poison or goring; the background suggests the Gaṅgā-ghāṭas of Kāśī where rites of deliverance are contemplated.
Even grave moral and ritual impurities are not beyond the horizon of purification when connected to dharmic rites and sacred geography, especially as later verses will praise the liberating power of Kāśī and Gaṅgā.
The passage belongs to the Kāśīkhaṇḍa and leads into the praise of the Uttaravāhinī Gaṅgā in Kāśī (Varanasi).
This verse lists categories of the departed; the explicit prescription (tarpaṇa/śrāddha) is stated in the immediately following verses.
