Classification and Definition of Yoga
श्रीकृष्ण उवाच । ज्ञाने क्रियायां चर्यायां सारमुद्धृत्य संग्रहात् । उक्तं भगवता सर्वं श्रुतं श्रुतिसमं मया
śrīkṛṣṇa uvāca | jñāne kriyāyāṃ caryāyāṃ sāramuddhṛtya saṃgrahāt | uktaṃ bhagavatā sarvaṃ śrutaṃ śrutisamaṃ mayā
Sri Krishna
Tattva Level: pati
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Significance: Frames Śiva’s teaching as śruti-samāna (Veda-equivalent), legitimizing the path of jñāna-kriyā-caryā as a complete soteriology leading to liberation by grace.
Type: stotra
Role: teaching
It establishes that the Shiva-centered teaching integrates jñāna (right understanding), kriyā (sacred practice), and caryā (ethical-devotional discipline), and that such instruction is regarded as Śruti-like—authoritative for liberation-oriented life.
By affirming kriyā and caryā alongside jñāna, it supports Saguna worship—such as Liṅga-pūjā—as a valid, scripturally grounded path when performed with right understanding, culminating in realization of Shiva as Pati (the Lord).
The verse points to a balanced sādhana: study and contemplation (jñāna), regular Shiva worship and mantra-japa such as the Pañcākṣarī “Om Namaḥ Śivāya” (kriyā), and disciplined conduct like purity, devotion, and service (caryā).
