It emphasizes adhikāra (fitness) for Shaiva practice: the disciple approaches sacred rites through restraint, purity, and obedience to the guru’s sanctioned procedure, aligning the individual soul (paśu) toward Shiva (Pati).
Linga-worship and Saguna Shiva upāsanā are performed through regulated ritual steps; this verse highlights the preparatory purification—fasting or havis-only diet—before the disciple is brought into the rite under the guru’s authority.
Upavāsa (religious fasting) or a havishyanna-style diet (havis-only) is prescribed as a preparatory observance, supporting mantra practice and ritual readiness for Shaiva worship and possible diksha.
