The Devas
Tattva Level: pashu
Mantra: devadeva jagannātha vaikuṃṭhādhipate prabho | rakṣāsmāñ śaraṇāpannān śrīhare trijagadguro
Type: stotra
Role: liberating
It highlights śaraṇāgati (taking refuge) as a decisive spiritual act: when overwhelmed by conflict and fear, the Devas turn to the divine protector, showing that humility and surrender open the way for grace and restoration of dharma.
Though addressed to Śrī Hari, the Shiva Purana frequently presents the cosmic order as upheld through coordinated divine functions. From a Shaiva Siddhanta lens, devotees may read this as affirmation that in crisis one should approach the Lord in a personal (saguṇa) form with devotion—just as worship of the Liṅga embodies accessible saguṇa upāsanā leading toward the highest truth.
The practical takeaway is refuge-prayer (śaraṇa-mantra/bhakti): mentally surrender fear and seek protection through japa and prayer. A Shaiva-aligned practice would be to accompany this attitude with pañcākṣarī japa (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) and simple Liṅga-pūjā as an expression of surrender.
