Sukta 60

Sukta 5.60

Rishi

Atri (Ātreya) (traditional for RV 5.60)

Devata

Agni (primary), with Maruts invoked in the hymn’s movement

Chandas

Triṣṭubh (probable; requires metrical verification)

This hymn invokes Agni as the discerning, rightly-seated priest who “sorts” and perfects the worshipper’s work, and then draws the Maruts into the rite as the dynamic force that carries the praise forward like victorious chariots. Moving between sacrificial order (Agni) and storming inspiration (Maruts), it culminates in the shared Soma-drinking: Agni-Vaiśvānara rejoices together with the Marut-host in the luminous fore-heaven, securing prosperity, right impulse, and successful offering.

Mantras

Mantra 1

I adore Agni, the one of self-effective power, with acts of reverence; seated here in front, may he discern and arrange what we have wrought. Like chariots bearing the plenitude of force, may the Maruts’ hymn move forward with right impulsion and prosper.

Mantra 2

When the Rudra-born Maruts stand upon their dappled, far-heard, easy-going chariots, even the forests bow down from your dread, O fierce ones; even the earth trembles, even the mountain.

Mantra 3

Even the great, age-old mountain fears; even Heaven’s ridge trembles at your roar. When you play, O Maruts bearing spears, you rush together like waters in one driving stream.

Mantra 4

Like choicest suitors, rich in wealth, they have fashioned their bodies with their own inherent powers, with gold; for splendour they become more splendid, strong upon their chariots—altogether they have made greatnesses in their forms.

Mantra 5

These (Maruts) are neither the ‘eldest’ nor the ‘youngest’; as brothers they have grown together for the increase of felicity. Their father is ever-young, Rudra of self-effective power; their mother Pṛśni is rich-yielding, bringing a good luminous day for the Maruts.

Mantra 6

Whether you are in the highest, the middle, or the lowest region, O Maruts, blissful ones, established in the inner heaven—therefore, O Rudras, take knowledge of us; and you too, O Agni, be aware of the offering that we bring in sacrifice.

Mantra 7

And when you, O Maruts, all-knowing, bring Agni down from heaven, from the upper region, upon your chariot-rims—then, exulting, you shaking ones who consume the hostile, set down the desirable good for the sacrificer who presses Soma.

Mantra 8

O Agni, drink the Soma with the Maruts—brightening, inspired singers, splendid in their companies—rejoicing. With the purifying, all-impelling vital powers, O Vaiśvānara, be together in the fore-heaven by the banner of light.

Frequently Asked Questions

It asks Agni to recognize and set in order the worshipper’s work, and it brings in the Maruts as the energizing powers that make the praise and the sacrifice move forward successfully.

The hymn treats the Maruts as Agni’s powerful companions in the ritual movement—forces that propel the stoma (hymn) like chariots and share in the Soma-joy, strengthening the rite’s effectiveness.

Vaiśvānara is Agni as the universal fire—present in all beings and worlds—linked with light and purification; here he is asked to unite with the Maruts in the luminous ‘fore-heaven’ as the rite reaches completion.
