The Marks of Merit and the Destinies of Beings

Divine vs Demonic Traits

न देवेषु न विज्ञेषु न धर्मश्रवणेषु च । स्तोत्रमंत्रादिके पुण्ये यथाकार्येष्वनिश्चयाः

na deveṣu na vijñeṣu na dharmaśravaṇeṣu ca | stotramaṃtrādike puṇye yathākāryeṣvaniścayāḥ

Concept: Indecision toward devas and dharma-śravaṇa leads to spiritual inertia; merit-bearing acts (stotra, mantra, nitya-karma) require niścaya (firm resolve).

Application: Commit to a small, consistent daily practice: one fixed time for dharma-śravaṇa (reading/listening), one stotra, one mantra-japa; reduce ‘maybe later’ spirituality by scheduling it like essential duty.

Primary Rasa: shanta

Secondary Rasa: karuna

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A figure sits at a crossroads of three paths: one leading to a temple where hymns rise like golden script, another to a quiet hermitage where sages teach, and a third to a noisy marketplace. The person’s posture shows hesitation—one foot lifted, eyes shifting—while faint, luminous mantra-syllables hover nearby, waiting to be embraced.","primary_figures":["a wavering seeker","sages (vijña) in a hermitage","temple chanters","symbolic mantra-syllables (oṁ, nārāyaṇa) as glowing calligraphy"],"setting":"crossroads between temple, āśrama, and marketplace; moral landscape rendered as physical paths","lighting_mood":"soft dawn with gentle divine glow on the dharma-path","color_palette":["pale saffron","dawn rose","mantra-gold","cool indigo","leaf green"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: central hesitant seeker at a three-way path; right side a Vishnu temple with gold-leaf halo and priests chanting stotra; left side sages teaching dharma-śravaṇa; foreground shows floating mantra letters in raised gold; rich reds/greens, ornate border, gem-like highlights on the temple and mantra.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: lyrical crossroads scene with delicate lines; cool morning palette; small temple and hermitage nestled in hills; the seeker’s subtle facial indecision; fine calligraphic mantra wisps drifting toward the dharma path.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: bold outlined seeker with expressive eyes; three stylized pathways; mantra glyphs as decorative motifs; Vishnu shrine with bright yellow-red aura; flat pigments and temple-wall symmetry.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: Krishna/Vishnu shrine framed by lotus borders; mantra and stotra rendered as floral-vine calligraphy; the seeker at center with two contrasting registers—upper serene devotional space, lower bustling market; deep blues and gold with intricate border work."}

Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"meditative","suggested_raga":"Yaman","pace":"slow-meditative","voice_tone":"reverent-soft","sound_elements":["tanpura drone","soft temple bell","pages turning (śāstra)","distant conch at intervals"]}

Sandhi Resolution Notes: यथाकार्येष्वनिश्चयाः → यथा-कार्येषु + अनिश्चयाः (ष्व + अ → स्व); stotramaṃtrādike → स्तोत्र-मन्त्र-आदि-के.

FAQs

It highlights lack of niścaya (firm resolve): wavering toward worship (devas), respect for the wise, listening to dharma, and performing meritorious practices like hymns and mantras.

Devotional life requires steadiness—regular hearing of dharma and consistent practice (stotra, mantra). The verse criticizes a mindset that remains perpetually undecided and therefore spiritually uncommitted.

One should act decisively in appropriate duties (yathākārya), choosing constructive, dharmic actions rather than remaining indifferent or wavering in matters of virtue.
