The Glory of the Devoted Wife (Pativratā) and the Māṇḍavya Curse: Sunrise Halted and Restored

सकृच्छृणोति यः पूतो दुष्कृतौघाद्विमुच्यते । सुरालयमवाप्नोति स्वर्गाद्भ्रष्टो धनी भवेत्

sakṛcchṛṇoti yaḥ pūto duṣkṛtaughādvimucyate | surālayamavāpnoti svargādbhraṣṭo dhanī bhavet

Unspecified (context-dependent; verse states a phalaśruti—benefit of hearing).

Concept: Even a single act of attentive hearing purifies and dissolves accumulated demerit; sacred sound is transformative.

Application: Make daily time for śāstra-śravaṇa (reading/listening), even briefly; treat it as inner hygiene that reshapes habits and speech.

Primary Rasa: shanta

Secondary Rasa: adbhuta

Type: celestial_realm

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A listener sits with folded hands as a sage recites; from the spoken syllables rise luminous waves that wash away dark, smoky forms symbolizing pāpa like a receding flood. Above, a radiant stairway leads to Suraloka, while on earth a shower of grains and coins hints at prosperity even after celestial merit is spent.","primary_figures":["A reciting sage","A devoted listener","Devas (distant, welcoming)"],"setting":"Forest āśrama with a small fire altar; the sky opens into a glimpse of Svarga’s terraces.","lighting_mood":"golden dawn","color_palette":["sunrise gold","smoke gray","river blue","sandalwood beige","vermillion"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: sage on a decorated seat reciting, listener kneeling, embossed gold syllable-streams forming a radiant arc to Svarga, dark pāpa-clouds dissolving below, lavish gold leaf halos, ruby and emerald garments, ornate celestial balcony with devas.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: intimate āśrama scene with delicate trees and a small kuṇḍa, fine calligraphic akṣaras floating like fireflies, soft dawn wash, distant pale-blue Svarga architecture, subtle depiction of ‘pāpa-flood’ as ink-like water receding.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: iconic sage and listener with bold outlines, stylized sound-waves as repeating lotus/spiral motifs, pāpa shown as dark serpentine forms dissolving, bright yellow-red-green palette, symmetrical celestial doorway above.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: ornate border of tulip-lotus vines (even if Tulasi not explicit), central sound-halo of Sanskrit akṣaras, deep indigo ground with gold highlights, celestial attendants at top corners, prosperity symbols (grain, coins) rendered as decorative motifs."}

Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"devotional","suggested_raga":"Bhairavi","pace":"slow-meditative","voice_tone":"reverent-soft","sound_elements":["tanpura drone","temple bells (soft)","forest birds","crackling sacred fire","silence between verses"]}

Sandhi Resolution Notes: sakṛt+śṛṇoti → sakṛcchṛṇoti; duṣkṛtaughāt+vimucyate → duṣkṛtaughādvimucyate; surālayam+avāpnoti → surālayamavāpnoti; svargāt+bhraṣṭaḥ → svargādbhraṣṭaḥ.

FAQs

Śravaṇa—devotional hearing. The verse says that hearing the teaching/recitation even once purifies a person and removes accumulated wrongdoing.

Freedom from a mass of sinful actions and attainment of the surālayam, the divine/heavenly realm (svarga).

It expresses residual merit: even if heavenly merit is exhausted and one returns to earthly life, the remaining puṇya manifests as prosperity and favorable conditions.
