Padma Purana — Bhumi Khanda, Shloka 45

Sukalā’s Account: Ikṣvāku and Sudevā; the Boar’s Resolve and the Dharma of Battle

कैवर्तेन विना नौर्वा संपूर्णा परिसागरे । न भात्येवं यथा सार्थः सार्थवाहेन वै विना

kaivartena vinā naurvā saṃpūrṇā parisāgare | na bhātyevaṃ yathā sārthaḥ sārthavāhena vai vinā

Unspecified (context not provided; likely within a Pulastya–Bhīṣma dialogue in Bhūmi-khaṇḍa)

Concept: Means are insufficient without guidance: instruments (boat, caravan) need a competent leader (boatman, caravan-chief) to reach the goal.

Application: Seek qualified mentorship for major undertakings (spiritual practice, vows, study, life decisions); cultivate leadership that is skilled, compassionate, and accountable.

On land, a caravan of merchants with camels and banners pauses at a desert crossroads until the sārthavāha steps forward, pointing the safe route—order emerging from uncertainty.","primary_figures":["boatman (kaivarta)","travelers/merchants","caravan-leader (sārthavāha)"],"setting":"Two-part journey scene: moonlit ocean with a boat; arid trade route with a caravan at a crossroads, distant hills and a faint temple spire on the horizon","lighting_mood":"moonlit with guiding starlight","color_palette":["midnight blue","silver starlight","sandstone ochre","teak brown","signal red"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: dramatic ocean scene with a richly ornamented boat, the kaivarta as central heroic figure with gold-leaf highlights on waves and stars; second panel shows a caravan with jeweled harnesses and banners, the sārthavāha gesturing forward; ornate borders, rich reds/greens, embossed gold for guidance motifs.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: lyrical moonlit sea with delicate wave patterns, fine star field, expressive boatman; caravan rendered with refined linework, cool distant hills, subtle atmospheric perspective; emphasis on journey-poetry and calm heroism.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: bold outlined boat and stylized waves, strong diagonal oar gesture, symbolic stars; caravan in flat ochre landscape with rhythmic camel forms; traditional pigment palette and temple-wall narrative clarity.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: symbolic ‘crossing’ composition—central boat framed by lotus borders, peacocks at corners, a guiding star motif above; caravan arranged in decorative procession style, deep blues and gold, intricate floral margins suggesting auspicious guidance."}

FAQs

It teaches that success in difficult undertakings requires competent guidance—like a boat needing a boatman and a caravan needing its leader.

It supports the principle that a seeker benefits from a qualified teacher or guide (guru/ācārya) to navigate the ‘ocean’ of worldly life and spiritual practice.

Undertakings should not be driven by resources alone; responsibility includes appointing capable leadership and heeding expert direction.
