The Episode of Vena: Purification, the ‘Vāsudevābhidhā’ Hymn, and the Dharma of Charity

Times, Tīrthas, Worthy Recipients

मामुद्दिश्य नरो भक्त्या ब्राह्मणाय प्रयच्छति । तस्याहं निर्विकल्पेन प्रयच्छामि न संशयः

māmuddiśya naro bhaktyā brāhmaṇāya prayacchati | tasyāhaṃ nirvikalpena prayacchāmi na saṃśayaḥ

جب کوئی شخص بھکتی کے ساتھ مجھے مقصد بنا کر برہمن کو دان دیتا ہے، تو میں بھی اسے بے خطا اجر عطا کرتا ہوں—اس میں کوئی شک نہیں۔

Unspecified (a deity speaking in first person, likely a Vaishnava context—Vishnu/Krishna—promising the fruit of charity dedicated to Him)

Concept: Charity offered to a brāhmaṇa with dedication to the Lord becomes bhakti-infused dāna, and the Lord personally ensures the reward.

Application: Before giving, mentally dedicate the act to Nārāyaṇa/Kṛṣṇa; give respectfully to worthy recipients; avoid transactional pride—trust the unseen return (anugraha).

Primary Rasa: shanta

Secondary Rasa: shringara

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A radiant four-armed Viṣṇu appears subtly behind a humble brāhmaṇa recipient, indicating that the gift is truly reaching the Lord. Brāhmaṇa

FAQs

It recommends dāna (charitable giving) to a brāhmaṇa performed with bhakti and explicitly dedicated to the Lord (“mām uddiśya”).

It frames charity not as a mere social act but as an offering made in devotion to God, where the inner intention (dedication) is central.

Give sincerely and with devotional intention; such giving is portrayed as spiritually effective and assured to yield a fitting reward.
