The Liberation of the Lizard
Godhā-vimukti
अस्थिदानं कृतं देवि कृपया हि दधीचिना । देवानामुपकारार्थं श्रुत्वा दैत्यैः पराजितान् ॥ ६५ ॥
asthidānaṃ kṛtaṃ devi kṛpayā hi dadhīcinā | devānāmupakārārthaṃ śrutvā daityaiḥ parājitān || 65 ||
Narada (narrating within a dialogue framework traditionally attributed to teachings transmitted to/through the Sanatkumara tradition)
Vrata: none
Rasa: {"primary_rasa":"karuna","secondary_rasa":"vira","emotional_journey":"Begins with compassion (kṛpayā) and culminates in heroic self-sacrifice for the devas’ welfare."}
It presents asthi-dāna—Dadhīci’s offering of his own bones—as the pinnacle of compassion and dharmic self-sacrifice, where personal loss is embraced for the protection and welfare of the righteous order.
While not explicitly naming bhakti, it embodies bhakti’s inner spirit: acting selflessly for the divine cause (the devas as upholders of dharma), motivated by compassion rather than personal gain.
The verse chiefly emphasizes dharma-ethics and dāna rather than a specific Vedāṅga; practically, it underlines the Vedic principle of intentionality in ritual charity—giving for loka-saṅgraha (the welfare of the world) rather than for reward.
