The Greatness of the Gaṅgā (Gaṅgā-māhātmya): Saudāsa/Kalmāṣapāda’s Curse and Release
श्रुणुयुस्ते पुराणानि प्राहुरित्थं पुराविदः । अहं तु गौतममुनेः सर्वज्ञाद्ब्रह्यवादिनः ॥ ४ ॥
śruṇuyuste purāṇāni prāhuritthaṃ purāvidaḥ | ahaṃ tu gautamamuneḥ sarvajñādbrahyavādinaḥ || 4 ||
اہلِ پوران نے کہا—“ہم اسی طرح آپ کے پوران سنیں گے۔” مگر میں نے تو سب کچھ جاننے والے، برہمن کے واعظ، گوتم مُنی سے (یہ) سنا ہے۔
Narada (narrative voice, asserting his source-tradition)
Vrata: none
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: adbhuta
It emphasizes śravaṇa (reverent listening) and establishes the Purāṇa’s authority through guru–ṛṣi paramparā, grounding the teaching in brahma-vāda (Vedic truth).
By highlighting “listening to the Purāṇas,” it points to bhakti’s foundational practice of śravaṇam—receiving sacred narratives and doctrine through an authentic lineage.
The verse chiefly highlights pramāṇa/authority via transmission (paramparā) rather than a specific Vedāṅga; it implicitly supports disciplined study and correct reception of scripture, which underlies Vyākaraṇa-based accurate recitation and understanding.
