Bhakti-Śraddhā-Ācāra-Māhātmya and the Commencement of the Mārkaṇḍeya Narrative
durlabhāḥ puruṣā loke bhagavadbhaktilālasāḥ | teṣāṃ saṅgo bhavedyasya tasya śāntirhi śāśvatī || 38 ||
Narada
Vrata: none
Primary Rasa: bhakti
Secondary Rasa: shanta
It declares that genuine longing for Bhagavan’s bhakti is uncommon, and that contact with such rare devotees becomes a direct cause of enduring inner peace (śāśvatī śānti).
Bhakti is shown not merely as a practice but as a deep yearning (lālasā). The verse emphasizes satsanga—keeping company with Bhagavad-bhaktas—as a powerful support that stabilizes the heart in peace and devotion.
No specific Vedanga (such as Vyākaraṇa, Jyotiṣa, or Śikṣā) is taught here; the practical takeaway is ethical-spiritual discipline through satsanga (choosing elevating association) as a core aid to dharma and bhakti.
