śrāddhaṃ bhuktvā paraśrāddhaṃ bhuñjate ye dvijātayaḥ / mahāpātikibhistulyā yānti te narakān bahūn
Sūta (narrator) conveying the Kurma Purana’s śrāddha-dharma injunctions to the sages
Primary Rasa: bhayanaka
Secondary Rasa: raudra
This verse does not directly teach Ātman metaphysics; it emphasizes dharma in śrāddha—ritual purity and restraint—seen in the Purāṇa as supportive disciplines that steady the mind for higher knowledge.
No explicit yoga technique is taught here; the practice implied is yama-like restraint (saṃyama) and disciplined conduct in rites, which the Kurma Purana treats as preparatory to śiva-vaiṣṇava integrated sādhanā found more explicitly in later teachings.
The verse is primarily dharma-ritual instruction and does not mention Śiva or Viṣṇu directly; within the Kurma Purana’s synthesis, such dharmic observance is framed as service to the one Supreme who is praised through both Śaiva and Vaiṣṇava forms.
