Commencement of the Upari-bhāga: The Sages Request Brahma-vidyā; Vyāsa Recalls the Badarikā Inquiry and Śiva–Viṣṇu Theophany
ततः स सूतः स्वगुरुं प्रणम्याह महामुनिम् / ज्ञानं तद् ब्रह्मविषयं मुनीनां वक्तुमर्हसि
tataḥ sa sūtaḥ svaguruṃ praṇamyāha mahāmunim / jñānaṃ tad brahmaviṣayaṃ munīnāṃ vaktumarhasi
پھر سوت نے اپنے گرو، اس مہامنی کو پرنام کر کے کہا—“اے مُنیور! برہمن سے متعلق وہ گیان مُنیوں کو بیان کرنے کے لائق آپ ہی ہیں۔”
Sūta
Primary Rasa: shanta
Secondary Rasa: bhakti
It frames the upcoming teaching as brahma-viṣaya jñāna—knowledge focused on Brahman—implying that the Supreme Self is to be realized through principled instruction transmitted by a qualified guru.
No specific technique is named in this verse; it establishes the prerequisite of śravaṇa (receiving instruction) through guru-vandana, which in the Kurma Purana’s broader yogic-dharmic method supports later disciplines like dhyāna and inner inquiry.
It does not directly mention Śiva or Viṣṇu; instead, it sets a non-sectarian Vedāntic tone by prioritizing Brahman-centered knowledge, a basis later used in the Kurma Purana for harmonizing Shaiva-Vaishnava theological language.
