Concept: Sound-classes can be re-tabulated by mixed grouping and vowel-grade distinctions

Application: Apply in constructing alternative phonetic tables for teaching/practice, marking the specified vowel-grade (‘caturtha-svara’) as a differentiator.

FAQs

It conveys a technical phonetic rule: a ‘second’ arrangement of sound-classes is described as being grouped with the palatal (tālu) consonant class and related classes, with a distinction based on a specified ‘fourth’ svara (vowel-grade/intonational category).

Beyond mythology and ritual, the Agni Purana preserves śāstric material on Sanskrit sound-science (śikṣā/varṇa-vicāra), showing its encyclopedic scope by embedding grammatical–phonetic taxonomy alongside religious instruction.

Correct classification and articulation of sounds supports accurate recitation and transmission of sacred texts; in the Purāṇic worldview, such precision safeguards mantra efficacy and the religious merit (puṇya) derived from proper chanting.
