Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Vastu","secondary_vidya":"Dharmashastra","practical_application":"Diagnosing and remedying śalya-doṣa (hidden obstructions/impurities) in a dwelling by correlating observed wall-disturbance and ominous sounds/names to the likely buried cause, guiding excavation and pacification rites.","sutra_style":true}

Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Description","entry_title":"Asthi-śalya: Wall disturbance and omen-based indication of hidden obstruction","lookup_keywords":["asthi-śalya","śalya-doṣa","bhitti-doṣa","nimitta-śabda","gṛha-doṣa"],"quick_summary":"Bone-like śalya in a site is said to cause wall disturbance and the householder’s discomfort. Ominous names/sounds heard are treated as nimitta indicating the source/nature of the hidden śalya to be located and addressed."}

Concept: Nimitta (omens) as diagnostic indicators for unseen causes (adṛṣṭa/gupta-doṣa) affecting lived wellbeing.

Application: Use observed effects (wall trouble, household unease) plus nimitta-śabda to localize and interpret the hidden defect before corrective action.

Khanda Section: Vāstu-śāstra (Defects/Śalya-doṣa and their effects in a dwelling)

Primary Rasa: bhayanaka

Secondary Rasa: adbhuta

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"A house wall showing cracks/disturbance while a vāstu-expert listens to an ominous utterance and marks the spot on the floor for locating a buried bone-like obstruction (śalya).","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala temple mural style, earthy reds and ochres, a vāstu-ācārya with palm-leaf notes indicating a spot inside a traditional house, subtle depiction of a disturbed wall, ritual calm yet ominous atmosphere.","tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style with gold highlights, interior of a house with a cracked wall, a priestly vāstu-expert pointing to the floor where an omen-sound was heard, ornate borders, symbolic śalya beneath the ground.","mysore_prompt":"Mysore painting style, clean linework, instructional composition: wall defect on one side, listener/ācārya at center, marked excavation point on the floor, labels implied for ‘bhitti’ and ‘śalya’.","mughal_miniature_prompt":"Mughal miniature, detailed domestic interior, a learned expert consulting notes while attendants react to an ominous word, the floor subtly cross-sectioned to hint at a buried bone-like object, fine architectural detailing."}

FAQs

Vāstu-vidyā: it describes the effects of an “asthi-śalya” (a hidden obstructive defect) on the house—especially wall-related disturbance—and teaches omen-based inference (hearing a specific name/sound) to identify the śalya’s indicated origin.

It preserves applied architectural diagnostics—linking structural trouble (bhitti) and domestic suffering (gṛhiṇo ’sukham) to unseen site-defects (śalya) and omen-reading—showing the Purana’s coverage beyond theology into technical Vāstu practice.

By identifying and addressing Vāstu-doṣas like śalya, the householder reduces inauspicious influences thought to manifest as distress, restoring harmony (śānti) in the dwelling and supporting orderly dharmic household life.
