Lord Agni (instructing the sage Vasiṣṭha in the Agni Purana’s didactic dialogue frame)

Vidya Category: {"primary_vidya":"Tantra","secondary_vidya":"Mantra","practical_application":"Apply finger-wise nyāsa: assign ‘rūpa’ and ‘rasa’ to the two thumbs and distribute remaining aspects across fingers in order, creating a tactile mnemonic for subtle-body mapping during japa/pūjā.","sutra_style":true}

Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Procedure","entry_title":"Aṅguli-nyāsa for Navātman (Thumb and Finger Placement)","lookup_keywords":["aṅguli-nyāsa","navātman","rūpa","rasa","thumb-nyāsa"],"quick_summary":"The verse prescribes placing ‘form’ and ‘taste’ on the two thumbs, then assigning the remaining aspects sequentially from the index finger through the left little finger. It is a practical hand-based consecration and concentration technique."}

Concept: The hand becomes a micro-maṇḍala; sensory principles are stabilized through touch-based placement, integrating cognition with embodied practice.

Application: Before mantra-japa, perform the finger sequence slowly to anchor attention; use the thumbs (rūpa/rasa) as ‘reset points’ when the mind wanders.

Khanda Section: Yoga–Tantra: Subtle-body visualization and nyāsa (finger/hand placement)

Primary Rasa: shanta

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"Close view of two hands with glowing thumbs labeled rūpa and rasa; the other fingers light up in sequence from index onward, indicating ordered placement up to the left little finger.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural, enlarged hands in ritual gesture, thumbs glowing with rūpa and rasa inscriptions, remaining fingers marked sequentially, bold outlines and temple-mural palette","tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting, hands with gold-highlighted fingertips, red Sanskrit labels on each finger segment, ornate border, devotional sheen","mysore_prompt":"Mysore style, instructional plate: labeled fingers with arrows showing order from index to left little finger, delicate lines, clear Devanagari callouts","mughal_miniature_prompt":"Mughal miniature, manuscript marginal illustration of hands with fine calligraphy labels, subtle shading, decorative floral border"}

Audio Atmosphere: {"recitation_mood":"focused","suggested_raga":"Hamsadhwani","pace":"medium","voice_tone":"instructional"}

Sandhi Resolution Notes:

FAQs

It teaches kara-nyāsa (finger/hand nyāsa): assigning specific tattvas/qualities of the ninefold self onto the thumbs and then sequentially onto the fingers up to the left little finger.

Beyond mythology, it preserves practical ritual-technology—precise embodied mappings used in mantra-sādhana and meditation—showing the Purana’s coverage of tantric procedure alongside theology and ethics.

By ritualizing inner principles through nyāsa, the practitioner internalizes the doctrine (tattva) as lived awareness, supporting concentration, purification of the senses, and steadiness of jīva-oriented meditation.
