Mantra 1
पुनानः सोम धारयापो वसानो अर्षसि आ रत्नधा योनिमृतस्य सीदस्युत्सो देवो हिरण्ययः
Soma, purifying thyself with thy stream, clothing thyself with the waters, thou flowest; bestower of treasures, thou sittest in the receptacle of ṛta; a golden, divine fountain (art thou).
Mantra 2
परीतो षिञ्चता सुतं सोमो य उत्तमं हविः दधन्वां यो नर्यो अप्स्वा3न्तरा सुषाव सोममद्रिभिः
Pour ye around the pressed Soma, who is the most excellent oblation; who bestows (benefits), who is manly; (he) who, amidst the waters, has been well expressed with the pressing-stones.
Mantra 3
आ सोम स्वानो अद्रिभिस्तिरो वाराण्यव्यया जनो न पुरि चम्वोर्विशद्धरिः सदो वनेषु दध्रिषे
Come, Soma, resounding beneath the pressing-stones; passing through the unfailing filters; entering the cups, bright (in hue); thou art held in the Sadas, in the wooden (vessels).
Mantra 4
प्र सोम देववीतये सिन्धुर्न पिप्ये अर्णसा अंशोः पयसा मदिरो न जागृविरच्छा कोशं मधुश्चुतम्
Flow forth, Soma, for the bringing of the gods; like a river he swells with the flood; with the milk (mingled) from the Soma-stalk, exhilarating and vigilant, (go) towards the vessel that drops sweetness.
Mantra 5
सोम उ ष्वाणः सोतृभिरधि ष्णुभिरवीनाम् अश्वयेव हरिता याति धारया मन्द्रया याति धारया
Soma, indeed, resounding, by the pressers upon the pressing-supports, (passing) in the sheep’s (wool), tawny, goes like a mare with the stream; with the gladdening stream he goes with the stream.
Mantra 6
तवाहं सोम रारण सख्य इन्दो दिवेदिवे पुरूणि बभ्रो नि चरन्ति मामव परिधींरति तां इहि
In thy friendship, O Soma, do I rejoice; O bright Indu, day by day many (blessings), O tawny one, descend to me: do thou protect (our) enclosing sticks, and come hither to (bestow) delight.
Mantra 7
मृज्यमानः सुहस्त्या समुद्रे वाचमिन्वसि रयिं पिशङ्गं बहुलं पुरुस्पृहं पवमानाभ्यर्षसि
Purified by skilful hands, in the reservoir thou quickenest sacred speech; and, O Pavamāna, thou streamest onward, bringing abundant wealth, bright-hued and desired of many.
Mantra 8
अभि सोमास आयवः पवन्ते मद्यं मदम् समुद्रस्याधि विष्टपे मनीषिणो मत्सरासो मदच्युतः
The active Soma-drops purify themselves, bearing the intoxicating draught, the exhilaration; upon the station of the reservoir (they settle), gladdening, distilling rapture, (guided) by the wise.
Mantra 9
पुनानः सोम जागृविरव्या वारैः परि प्रियः त्वं विप्रो अभवो ऽङ्गिरस्तम मध्वा यज्ञं मिमिक्ष णः
Purifying thyself, O Soma, vigilant and resounding, encompassed with waters, beloved (of the gods), thou hast become a sage, most Angiras-like; with sweetness thou hast strengthened our sacrifice.
Mantra 10
इन्द्राय पवते मदः सोमो मरुत्वते सुतः सहस्रधारो अत्यव्यमर्षति तमी मृजन्त्यायवः
For Indra flows the exhilaration: Soma, pressed for him who is attended by the Maruts, of a thousand streams, passes over the sheep’s fleece; him, verily, the active (priests) cleanse.
Mantra 11
पवस्व वाजसातमो ऽभि विश्वानि वार्या त्वं समुद्रः प्रथमे विधर्मं देवेभ्यं सोम मत्सरः
Purify thyself, O Soma, best bestower of strength, unto all desirable boons: thou art an ocean; in the first (pressing) thou upholdest the appointed ordinance for the gods, (thou) exhilarating draught.
Mantra 12
पवमाना असृक्षत पवित्रमति धारया मरुत्वन्तो मत्सरा इन्द्रिया हया मेधामभि प्रयांसि च
The purifying (Soma-streams) have been sent forth, in a current, over the filter; exhilarating, Marut-attended, vigorous as steeds, (they promote) intelligence and (all) advances (of the rite) besides.
It praises Soma as he purifies himself through water and the strainer (pavitra), becomes established in the ritually correct seat (ṛta), and then grants wealth, strength, and successful progress of the sacrifice.
In Soma hymns, Sāyaṇa and ritual tradition commonly take ‘samudra’ as the large collecting receptacle or reservoir (e.g., droṇa-kalaśa) where the purified juice gathers, not a natural sea.
