Ravana’s Funeral Rites and the Ethics of Post-War Conduct
यदैवहिजनस्थानेराक्षसैर्भहुभिर्वृतः ।खरस्तुनिहतोभ्रातातदारामो न मानुषः ।।6.114.19।।यदैवनगरींलङ्कांदुष्प्रवेशांसुरैरपि ।प्रविष्टोहनुमान्वीर्यात्तदैवव्यथितावयम् ।।6.114.20।।
yadaiva hi janasthāne rākṣasair bahubhir vṛtaḥ | kharas tu nihato bhrātā tadā rāmo na mānuṣaḥ ||
yadaiva nagarīṃ laṅkāṃ duṣpraveśāṃ surair api | praviṣṭo hanumān vīryāt tadaiva vyathitā vayam ||
“その時からだ。Janasthānaで、数多のrākṣasaに囲まれたお前の兄Kharaが討たれた時、Rāmaはもはや人間ではないと知れた。さらにHanumānがただ勇力によって、神々でさえ入り難いLaṅkāの都へ踏み入った時、まさしく我らは深く震えおののいた。”
" At Janasthana when your brother Khara was surrounded by many Rakshasas also he got killed by a mortal. So also, when Hanuman entered the city of Lanka, which is difficult to enter even for gods, I got perturbed."
Dharma includes prudent recognition of reality: ignoring clear signs and wise inference leads to ruin; arrogance blinds one to truth (satya).
Mandodarī recalls earlier turning points—Khara’s defeat and Hanumān’s entry into Laṅkā—as warnings that were not heeded.
Hanumān’s fearless devotion and heroic power, and the implied virtue of discernment—seeing consequences before they arrive.
