मनु-उपदेशः — भूत-उत्पत्ति, इन्द्रिय-निवृत्ति, तथा पर-स्वभाव-विवेकः

Manu’s Instruction on Elemental Origination, Sense-Withdrawal, and Discrimination of the Supreme Nature

रश्मीस्तेषां स मनसा यदा सम्यड्नियच्छति । तदा प्रकाशते<स्यात्मा घटे दीपो ज्वलन्निव

raśmīs teṣāṃ sa manasā yadā samyaṅ niyacchati | tadā prakāśate 'syātmā ghaṭe dīpo jvalann iva ||

Wika ni Bhīṣma: Kapag ang tao, sa pamamagitan ng isip, ay wastong napipigil ang mga “sinag” ng mga pandama—ang kanilang pagtakbo sa mga bagay—kung gayon ang Sarili sa loob niya’y sumisinag, gaya ng ilaw na matatag na nagliliyab sa loob ng banga. Itinuturo nito ang disiplina sa loob: ang pamumunong moral ay nagsisimula sa pagpigil sa mga pandama sa pamamagitan ng isip na mahusay na ginagabayan, at mula sa pagpipigil na iyon sumisibol ang malinaw na pagliwanag ng sarili, hindi ang palabas sa labas.
