रणभूमिवर्णनम् — Devāsuropama-yuddha and the ‘River’ Metaphor of the Battlefield

गौतमो दक्षिणे पाश्वे शकैश्न यवनै: सह । अश्वत्थामा पृष्ठतो5भूत्‌ काम्बोजै: परिवारित:

sañjaya uvāca | gautamo dakṣiṇe pārśve śakaiś ca yavanaiḥ saha | aśvatthāmā pṛṣṭhato 'bhūt kāmbojaiḥ parivāritaḥ ||

Sinabi ni Sañjaya: Sa kanang pakpak ay nakatayo si Gautama (Kṛpācārya) kasama ang mga Śaka at Yavana; at sa likuran ay nakatayo si Aśvatthāmā, napaliligiran ng mga Kāmboja. Ipinapakita ng taludtod ang hanay-pandigma ng mga Kaurava: kung paanong ang mga bihasang pinuno at mga kaalyadong pangkat ay inilagay upang ipagtanggol ang pormasyon—isang larawan ng kalkuladong kaayusan ng digmaan, kung saan ang katapatan sa sariling panig at tungkuling pang-estratehiya ay nangingibabaw sa pansariling ginhawa, habang nagpapatuloy ang mas malaking trahedyang moral ng paglalaban ng magkakamag-anak.
