Garuḍa Array and the Ardhacandra Counter-Formation

Educational Q&A

The verse highlights how martial excellence (parrying weapon with weapon) can be overtaken by destructive intent (jighāṃsantau). It invites reflection on kṣatriya-duty: courage and skill are praised, yet the ethical tension remains when duty becomes fueled by rage and the aim shifts to total annihilation.

Sañjaya describes a fierce duel: two foremost warriors, enraged like tigers, exchange blows and counter each other’s weapons. Their mutual intent to kill escalates the encounter into a great, chaotic battle scene, set within the larger Bhīṣma-parvan fighting.
