Merit and Destinations from the Gift of Cows
etat sarvam aśeṣeṇa pitāmaha yathātatham | vettum icchāmi dharmajña paraṁ kautūhalaṁ hi me ||
The verse highlights the dharmic method of learning: sincere inquiry, respect for an authoritative elder-teacher, and the insistence on knowing matters “yathātatham” (as they truly are), not partially or by hearsay.
In the Anuśāsana Parva’s instructional setting, Yudhiṣṭhira addresses Bhīṣma as Pitāmaha and requests a complete, accurate explanation of the topic under discussion, motivated by strong curiosity and a desire to grasp dharma thoroughly.
