Viśvāmitra-janma: Ṛcīka–Satyavatī–Gādhi and the Charu Exchange (विश्वामित्र-जन्म: ऋचीक–सत्यवती–गाधि वृत्तान्तः)
कुशिकस्यात्मज: श्रीमान् गाधिनाम जनेश्वर: । अपुत्र: प्रसवेनार्थी वनवासमुपावसत्,कुशिकके पुत्र महाराज गाधि हुए, जो दीर्घकालतक पुत्रहीन रह गये। तब संतानकी इच्छासे पुण्यकर्म करनेके लिये वे वनमें रहने लगे
Kuśikasyātmajaḥ śrīmān gādhir nāma janeśvaraḥ | aputraḥ prasavenārthī vanavāsam upāvasat ||
Wika ni Bhīṣma: May isang maringal na hari na nagngangalang Gādhi, ang tanyag na anak ni Kuśika. Matagal siyang walang anak na lalaki at sabik sa supling; kaya’t namuhay siya sa gubat, nagsagawa ng matitinding pag-aayuno at mga gawaing may kabanalan upang magkaanak—ipinapakita ang huwarang dharma na ang pagnanasa ay dapat hanapin sa pagpipigil-sa-sarili at matuwid na pagsisikap, hindi sa pamimilit o pagmamadali.
भीष्म उवाच
The verse presents a dharmic model for pursuing personal aims: even a king seeking an heir turns to disciplined, meritorious conduct—forest-life and austerity—implying that legitimate desires should be fulfilled through righteous means, patience, and self-control.
Bhīṣma introduces King Gādhi, son of Kuśika, who has remained without a son for a long time. Wanting offspring, he goes to live in the forest to perform observances and accumulate merit aimed at obtaining progeny.
