Praise of Ācāra as the Basis of Longevity, Fame, and Prosperity
नैकवस्त्रेण भोक्तव्यं न नग्न: स्नातुमर्हति । फटे हुए आसनपर न बैठे। फूटी हुई काँसीकी थालीको काममें न ले। एक ही वस्त्र (केवल धोती) पहनकर भोजन न करे (साथमें गमछा भी लिये रहे)। नग्न होकर स्नान न करे
naikavastreṇa bhoktavyaṃ na nagnaḥ snātum arhati | phaṭe huye āsanapara na baiṭhe | phūṭī huī kāṃsī-kī thālīko kāmameṃ na le | eka hī vastra (kevala dhotī) pahanakara bhojana na kare (sāthameṃ gamachā bhī liye rahe) | nagna hokara snāna na kare |
Wika ni Bhīṣma: “Huwag kumain na iisang kasuotan lamang ang suot, at huwag maligo nang hubad. Huwag umupo sa upuang punit, at huwag gumamit ng pinggang tansong may bitak. Ito’y mga tuntunin ng wastong asal upang mapangalagaan ang kahinhinan, kalinisan, at dangal sa araw-araw—maliliit na disiplina na nagtataguyod ng dharma sa pamamagitan ng pagpipigil sa katawan at paggalang sa kaayusang panlipunan.”
भीष्म उवाच
Dharma is sustained through everyday discipline: maintain modesty and cleanliness (do not bathe naked), and preserve dignity and propriety in daily habits (do not eat with only one cloth; avoid torn or broken household items used in sitting and eating).
In the Anuśāsana Parva, Bhīṣma continues instructing Yudhiṣṭhira on dharma. Here he gives practical rules of personal and domestic conduct—small observances that reflect inner restraint and social propriety.
