पाण्डोः श्राद्धं, सत्यवत्याः वनगमनम्, बाल्यस्पर्धा च
Pāṇḍu’s Śrāddha, Satyavatī’s Withdrawal, and Childhood Rivalry
तस्याद्य व्यसने बुद्धि: संजातेयं ममाधमा । त्यक्तस्य देवैरनयान्मृगयां परिधावत:,मैं शिकारके पीछे दौड़ता रहता हूँ; मेरी इसी अनीतिके कारण जान पड़ता है देवताओंने मुझे त्याग दिया है। इसीलिये तो ऐसे विशुद्ध वंशमें उत्पन्न होनेपर भी आज व्यसनमें फँसकर मेरी यह बुद्धि इतनी नीच हो गयी
tasyādya vyasane buddhiḥ saṃjāteyaṃ mamādhamā | tyaktasya devair anayān mṛgayāṃ paridhāvataḥ ||
“Ngayong araw, ang aking isip ay lumubog sa bisyo at naging hamak. Dahil sa aking di-matuwid na asal—ang pagtakbo-takbo sa paghahabol sa pangangaso—wari ko’y iniwan na ako ng mga diyos. Kaya, bagama’t isinilang sa dalisay na angkan, ngayo’y nalugmok ako sa pagkahumaling, at ang aking pag-unawa’y lubhang napariwara.”
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse frames moral decline as a consequence of adharma: indulgence in a degrading pursuit (here, obsessive hunting) erodes buddhi (ethical discernment) and is experienced as loss of divine support. It emphasizes personal responsibility—recognizing one’s own misconduct as the cause of downfall.
A speaker reflects with remorse that, despite noble birth, he has become trapped in a harmful habit and now feels forsaken by the gods. The confession highlights how relentless pursuit of the hunt has led to a base state of mind and misfortune.
