पाण्डोः श्राद्धं, सत्यवत्याः वनगमनम्, बाल्यस्पर्धा च
Pāṇḍu’s Śrāddha, Satyavatī’s Withdrawal, and Childhood Rivalry
तस्य कामात्मन: क्षेत्रे राज: संयतवागृषि: । कृष्णद्वैपायन: साक्षाद् भगवान् मामजीजनत्,उन्हीं कामासक्त नरेशकी पत्नीसे वाणीपर संयम रखनेवाले ऋषिप्रवर साक्षात् भगवान् श्रीकृष्णद्वैपायनने मुझे उत्पन्न किया
tasya kāmātmanaḥ kṣetre rājaḥ saṁyatavāg ṛṣiḥ | kṛṣṇadvaipāyanaḥ sākṣād bhagavān mām ajījanat ||
Sinabi ni Vaiśampāyana: Sa lupain ng haring yaon—na ang likas ay pinaghaharian ng pagnanasa—ang dakilang rishi na si Kṛṣṇa-Dvaipāyana, mahinahon at mapagpigil sa pananalita at tunay na banal, ang siyang nagluwal sa akin. Ipinahihiwatig ng talatang ito na ang pagkilos na may disiplina at nakaugat sa dharma ay maaaring sumibol kahit sa gitna ng kapaligirang binabahiran ng pita; at na ang pagpipigil at kabanalan ang itinatanghal na panimbang sa pagnanasang walang pagpipigil.
वैशम्पायन उवाच
The verse contrasts a passion-driven environment (kāmātmā) with the sage’s disciplined restraint (saṁyatavāk), implying that ethical order and authoritative transmission of tradition arise through self-control and sanctity rather than through desire.
Vaiśampāyana identifies his own origin: he was begotten by the sage Kṛṣṇa-Dvaipāyana (Vyāsa) within the sphere of a king characterized as desire-driven, with the broader context implying the king’s wife as the mother.
