The Greatness and Self-Testimony of the Agni Purāṇa

Concept: Adhikāra-bheda in teaching: the ‘guhya/paramārtha’ is to be transmitted selectively; relationship (father/son, guru/śiṣya) is insufficient without readiness.
Application: Before sharing advanced doctrines/mantras, test for steadiness, ethics, humility, and commitment; teach preliminaries first (yama-niyama, bhakti basics), then disclose deeper instruction privately.

It lays down a niyama (restriction) on transmitting the highest, esoteric teaching (paramārtha): it should not be disclosed casually even to close relations like a son or a disciple, implying guarded initiation-based instruction.
Beyond rituals and doctrines, the Agni Purana also codifies knowledge-governance—who may receive teachings, under what conditions, and how secrecy protects potency and correct practice—showing its coverage of pedagogy, ethics, and dharma.
Restraining disclosure preserves the sanctity of the supreme teaching, prevents misuse or misunderstanding, and supports right transmission (adhikāra), which is treated as dharmically essential for spiritual efficacy.
