Encyclopedic Reference: {"reference_type":"Formula","entry_title":"Chandas-saṅkhyā: Sevenfold and Doubling Computation (764 / 1000)","lookup_keywords":["chandas","saṅkhyā","saptadhā","dvidhā","764"],"quick_summary":"A numerical rule is given: multiply a unit sevenfold and then double a unit again, yielding 764, with a stated total framed as ‘one thousand’—a mnemonic-style prosodic computation."}

Concept: Knowledge can be compressed into algorithmic rules (saṅkhyā-sūtra) for reliable reproduction—here applied to chandas enumeration.

Application: Use the stated multiplication/doubling steps as a quick mental algorithm when deriving metrical totals or checking enumerations in prosody lessons.

Khanda Section: Chandas/Prosody (Sanskrit Metrics and Syllabic Enumeration)

FAQs

It gives a technical rule of numerical multiplication and doubling used for metrical/prosodic enumeration (chandas), arriving at the count 764 and relating it to a total of 1000.

Beyond theology and ritual, the Agni Purana preserves technical śāstra material—here, chandas/prosody and numerical computation—showing its scope across linguistic sciences and systematic enumeration.

Mastery of chandas supports correct recitation and preservation of sacred texts; accurate metrical knowledge is traditionally linked with purity of mantra-prayoga and the merit of faultless chanting.
