Account of the Origin of the Ancestors (Pitṛs) and the Regulations for Śrāddha Offerings

ity uktvā tu tadā brahmā teṣāṃ panthānam ākarot | dakṣiṇāyanasaṃjñaṃ tu pitṝṇāṃ ca pitāmahaḥ || 34.12 ||

FAQs

It reflects a Purāṇic cosmological taxonomy in which temporal cycles (such as the southern course, Dakṣiṇāyana) are linked to post-mortem or ancestral pathways (Pitṛ-related routes), illustrating how time-reckoning and afterlife geography are integrated in Sanskrit narrative traditions.

No terrestrial geographic site is specified; the verse identifies a cosmological route (Dakṣiṇāyana) associated with the Pitṛs rather than a place-name that can be mapped to a modern location.

Rather than a direct moral injunction, the verse conveys an ordering principle: cosmic and ancestral systems are portrayed as structured and instituted (here, by Brahmā), supporting the broader Purāṇic emphasis on maintaining alignment with established cycles and rites connected to ancestors.
