The king (narendra/nṛpa)
Type: tirtha
Listener: dvija-sattama (addressed in the narrative unit)
Scene: A royal couple, now resolved, stands near a sacred riverside; the king gestures toward the palace direction as if indicating his son’s enthronement, while turning back toward the forested tīrtha to begin daily austerities.
Dharma includes orderly transition: after fulfilling royal duty by securing succession, one may pursue tapas for higher spiritual aims.
The king’s intended life of austerity is anchored at the tīrtha of Viśvāmitra-jala described in this adhyāya.
Nitya-tapas (daily austerity/discipline), presented as the king’s chosen observance after the tīrtha’s grace.
