anudruto hi vipreṃdrāḥ śakro'yaṃ brahmahatyayā | pitāmahasadaḥ prāpa saṃtaptahṛdayo bhṛśam
Narrator (Purāṇic narrator, contextually Sūta/Lomaharṣaṇa)
Listener: viprendra-s (best of Brahmins)
Scene: Indra, distressed and downcast, enters Brahmā’s radiant assembly; sages and devas witness his shame and burning remorse as he seeks relief from brahmahatyā.
Even the mightiest are accountable to dharma; repentance and seeking sacred guidance are the first steps toward purification.
The passage leads into the glorification of Sītākuṇḍa, introduced shortly after as the remedy for brahmahatyā.
This verse sets the scene; the specific prescription (worship and bathing) is given in the following verses.
