प्रतोदो वैश्यया धार्यो वासोंतः शूद्रया तथा । असवर्णा स्वेष विधिः स्मृतौ दृष्टश्च वेदने
pratodo vaiśyayā dhāryo vāsoṃtaḥ śūdrayā tathā | asavarṇā sveṣa vidhiḥ smṛtau dṛṣṭaśca vedane
สำหรับสตรีไวศยะ โทษคือให้แบก “ประโตทะ” (pratoda: แส้/ไม้กระตุ้น). สำหรับสตรีศูทร ก็ให้แบกโทษที่เรียกว่า “วาโสํตะ” (vāsoṃta) เช่นกัน. ส่วนสตรีต่างวรรณะ มีบทบัญญัติแยกต่างหาก ซึ่งปรากฏทั้งในคัมภีร์สมฤติและในความเข้าใจทางนิติธรรมตามพระเวท.
