śrīmārkaṇḍeya uvāca | akāryametadviprāṇāṃ yastvimaṃ pibate stanam | punaścaivopanayanaṃ vratasiddhiṃ na gacchati
Śrī Mārkaṇḍeya
Tirtha: Revā (Narmadā)
Type: river
Listener: Implied interlocutor addressed as ‘padma-locane’ in the surrounding sequence (likely a revered listener within the kathā frame)
Scene: Mārkaṇḍeya, serene yet firm, raises a hand in instruction; the mother stands concerned; the brāhmaṇa/sage hesitates; ritual thread and Vedic implements emphasize dvija identity; atmosphere of moral instruction.
Ends do not justify means in dharma; violating brāhmaṇa purity/discipline undermines both status and the fruit of vows.
No tīrtha is directly praised in this verse; the focus is dharma-judgment within the Revā Khaṇḍa narrative.
Re-initiation (upanayana) is prescribed as a corrective measure, and the loss of vrata-siddhi is stated as a consequence.
