Sūta Gosvāmī (narrating Śiva’s worship-method to the sages of Naimiṣāraṇya)
Tattva Level: pasha
Shiva Form: Dakṣiṇāmūrti
Significance: Connects Purāṇic Śaiva practice to Upaniṣadic authority; mantra-guided bhasma-śuddhi is presented as a means to inner purification supporting liberation-oriented sādhana.
Mantra: “agnir …” (Jābāla-upaniṣad mantras beginning with ‘Agni’)—exact pada not fully quoted in the verse.
Type: stotra
Role: teaching
It sanctifies bhasma-dhāraṇa as an Upaniṣadic, purificatory act: the devotee ritually cleanses and consecrates the body-mind as a fit seat for Śiva-bhakti and Śiva-jñāna.
Bhasma mixed with water and applied with mantra is a preparatory rite for Saguna Śiva worship—especially before approaching the Liṅga—marking the devotee with Śiva’s signs (Tripuṇḍra) and aligning intention with Śiva’s grace.
Perform sevenfold sprinkling/cleansing with water-mixed bhasma while reciting the “Agni…” mantras (per the Jābāla Upaniṣad), as part of Tripuṇḍra/vibhūti practice.
