This verse presents key epithets of Śiva that point to His lordship (Īśāna), transcendence over the gods (Devadeva), and awe-inspiring power (Bhīma), while also affirming that His divine energies (Śaktis) are integral to how His grace and sovereignty function in the world—central to a Shaiva Siddhanta understanding of Pati with inseparable Śakti.
By naming Śiva through recognizable forms and functions, the verse supports Saguna upāsanā—devotional contemplation of Śiva’s attributes—often performed before the Śiva-liṅga through nāma-japa (repetition of names), archana, and meditation on His powers (Śaktis) as the living presence of the Lord.
A practical takeaway is nāma-japa: recite these names of Śiva along with the Pañcākṣarī mantra (Om Namaḥ Śivāya), and meditate that the Lord’s Śakti is the force by which bondage is removed and grace arises—especially suitable during Mahāśivarātri worship.
