कोहं वा कुत आयातः किं कार्य तु मदीयकम् । कस्य पुत्रोऽहमुत्पन्नः केनैव निर्मितोऽधुना
kohaṃ vā kuta āyātaḥ kiṃ kārya tu madīyakam | kasya putro'hamutpannaḥ kenaiva nirmito'dhunā
“เราคือใคร และมาจากที่ใด? หน้าที่ที่กำหนดแก่เราคืออะไร? เราเป็นบุตรของผู้ใดเมื่อได้บังเกิดแล้ว และผู้ใดกันเล่าที่เพิ่งสร้างเราขึ้นมา?”

It presents Brahma’s awakening into spiritual discernment: the jīva (and even the cosmic creator) must ask about true origin, purpose, and the ultimate cause—pointing beyond limited agency toward Shiva as the supreme Pati (Lord) who empowers all functions.
Brahma’s doubt about his own source sets the narrative ground for recognizing a higher, worship-worthy reality. In Shaiva framing, Saguna Shiva (often approached through the Linga) is the accessible revelation of the supreme cause who grants knowledge of one’s true role and dependence.
The verse suggests ātma-vicāra (self-inquiry) supported by Shaiva upāsanā—mentally repeating the Panchakshara (“Om Namaḥ Śivāya”) to seek clarity of origin, duty (dharma), and surrender to Shiva as the inner guide.
