Narrator (Purāṇic narrator continuing a genealogical account)

Concept: Dynastic continuity is portrayed as part of cosmic design; kings embody portions of cosmic elements (here ‘samudrāṃśa’), implying responsibility to uphold dharma.

Application: See leadership as stewardship: power is a trust; one’s ‘portion’ (talent, status) should serve stability and righteousness.

Primary Rasa: vira

Secondary Rasa: adbhuta

FAQs

The verse mentions Śaṃtanu (described as an amśa of the Ocean), and the royal figures Citrāṅgada and Vicitravīrya (and Vicitravīrya’s son). It frames them within the Paurava (Puru) lineage.

Purāṇic genealogies often describe kings as partial manifestations (aṃśas) of cosmic deities or elements to signal divine sanction, extraordinary qualities, or a mythic-cosmic grounding of royal lineages.

They connect sacred history with cosmic order (dharma), situating later narratives and teachings within an authoritative lineage framework and reinforcing the Purāṇic view that human history participates in a divinely patterned universe.
