Vasiṣṭha

Concept: Past conduct rooted in karma and dharma explains present attainments; attentive listening is itself a dharmic act that opens understanding.

Application: When seeking life-answers, cultivate śravaṇa (listening) with consent and attention; review prior choices and align future conduct with dharma.

Primary Rasa: shanta

Secondary Rasa: adbhuta

Visual Art Cues: {"scene_description":"Vasiṣṭha, serene and authoritative, raises a hand in gentle instruction, promising to recount the listener’s former dharmic deeds. The disciple sits attentive, eyes lowered, as if the past is about to unfold like a sacred story.","primary_figures":["Vasiṣṭha","a dvija listener/disciple"],"setting":"An āśrama courtyard with a yajña-kuṇḍa in the background, deer-skin seat, water pot (kamaṇḍalu), and manuscripts.","lighting_mood":"golden dawn","color_palette":["sunrise gold","ash-white","sage green","rust brown","sky blue"],"tanjore_prompt":"Tanjore painting style: Vasiṣṭha with radiant gold halo, right hand in teaching gesture, kamaṇḍalu and daṇḍa beside him; disciple seated respectfully; gold leaf detailing on the halo and ornaments, rich red-green drapery, temple-arch frame with floral motifs.","pahari_prompt":"Pahari miniature style: dawn light over an āśrama courtyard, delicate lines on Vasiṣṭha’s beard and matted hair; soft gradients in the sky, refined posture of the disciple; subtle narrative anticipation with calm naturalism.","kerala_mural_prompt":"Kerala mural style: stylized Vasiṣṭha with bold outlines and large expressive eyes, warm yellow-ochre skin tones; simplified ritual objects; rhythmic decorative borders typical of temple murals.","pichwai_prompt":"Pichwai cloth painting style: instructional scene placed within ornate lotus-and-vine borders; a small Viṣṇu emblem above as auspicious witness; deep blue background with gold floral filigree and symmetrical composition."}

Sandhi Resolution Notes: यत्त्वया = यत् + त्वया; कर्मधर्माश्रितंद्विज = कर्मधर्माश्रितम् + द्विज; तदहं = तत् + अहम्; श्रूयतां (आज्ञार्थे कर्मणि)

FAQs

He offers to expound the listener’s earlier conduct—actions rooted in karma (right action) and dharma (duty/righteousness).

“Dvija” literally means “twice-born,” typically a Brahmin (or more broadly a member of the twice-born varṇas); the specific individual is not named within this single verse.

It frames personal conduct as accountable to dharma and presents instruction as something to be received willingly—“listen, if you wish.”
