Narada Purana — Purva Bhaga, Shloka 23

The Recitation of the Thousand Names of Rādhā and Kṛṣṇa (Yugala-Sahasranāma) and Śaraṇāgati-Dharma

arthavādaṃ hare rnāmni pāṣaṃḍaṃ nāmasaṃgrahe | alase nāstike caiva harināmopadeśanam || 23 ||

FAQs

It safeguards the sanctity of Hari’s Name by warning against attitudes and contexts that undermine faith—reducing the Name to “mere praise,” mixing chanting with heretical intent, or teaching it where receptivity and reverence are absent.

Bhakti here is not only repetition of the Name but also śraddhā (trust) and proper upadeśa (instruction). The verse implies that devotion flourishes when the Name is approached with reverence and taught to those prepared to honor it.

It highlights dharmic discipline in mantra/nāma transmission—upadeśa must match the adhikāra (fitness) of the recipient, a practical rule aligned with śāstric pedagogy and ritual propriety rather than a technical point of grammar or astrology.
