Lajjā is treated as a divine safeguard that protects society and the individual from harmful action; ethical restraint is thus not weakness but Devī’s presence as conscience.
A dharma-inflected stuti inside the Devī Māhātmya upākhyāna; it contributes to purāṇic ethical formation more than to formal pancalakṣaṇa narration.
As inner modesty/conscience, lajjā marks the turning back of outward-going impulses; esoterically it is a śakti that seals and conserves spiritual energy (saṃyama).
