Adhyaya 8 — Harishchandra’s Trial: Truth, the Sale of Family, and Bondage to a Chandala

Sanskrit

महद्दुःखमिदं भद्रे यत् त्वमेवं ब्रवीषि माम् ।

किं तव स्मितसंलापा मम पापस्य विस्मृताः ॥

Transliteration

mahaddūḥkham idaṃ bhadre yat tvam evaṃ bravīṣi mām | kiṃ tava smitasaṃlāpā mama pāpasya vismṛtāḥ ||

Translation

โอ้สตรีผู้เป็นมงคล การที่เจ้ากล่าวกับเราดังนี้เป็นความโศกใหญ่ยิ่ง. ถ้อยคำอันแย้มยิ้มและวาจาอ่อนโยนของเจ้าได้ทำให้ลืมความผิดของเราหรือ?
