Adhyaya 48 — The Emanation of Beings from Brahma: Night, Day, Twilight, and the Orders of Creation

sāpaviddhā tanus tena sadyo rātrir ajāyata ||

Temporal rhythms (night/day) are tied to guṇic states: night corresponds to tamas and withdrawal. Ethically, it hints at rest, obscuration, and the need to transcend tamasic inertia.
Sarga: alongside beings, cosmic conditions (like night) are also generated as part of creation’s ordering.
Casting off a ‘tamasic body’ suggests that obscuration is a sheath (upādhi) that can be relinquished; night symbolizes the veiling power that follows from tamas.
