Agastya’s Encounter with Ilvala and Vātāpi; Dāna, Progeny, and the Renown of Agastya-Āśrama

na cāpi dharmam icchāmi viloptuṃ te kathaṃcana | evaṃ tu me yathākāmaṃ sampādayitum arhasi ||

Educational Q&A

A request should not be pursued at the cost of another’s dharma; ethical action requires ensuring that duty and spiritual discipline (tapas) remain unharmed while seeking cooperation.

Agastya addresses someone from whom he seeks a favor, clarifying that he does not intend to undermine that person’s dharma, and urging them to fulfill his wish only in a manner compatible with their righteous obligations and austerities.
