Steady adherence to a prescribed discipline (niyama) over time bears fruit; divine approval is portrayed as arising from sustained, faithful observance rather than haste or mere intention.
Yudhiṣṭhira reports that a particular observance was maintained for eighteen years, and upon the completion of the eighteenth year the goddess Sāvitrī became pleased—signaling the successful culmination of the practice and the gaining of divine favor.
