śuśrāva tasya vaidehī tatas tāṁ karuṇāṁ giram
The verse highlights attentive listening to another’s sorrowful, compassionate speech—an ethical moment where empathy and discernment support dharma in the face of suffering.
Markaṇḍeya narrates that Vaidehī (Sītā) hears a man’s words and then attends to his karuṇa (pathos-filled) speech, marking a transition to a plea or lament that evokes compassion.
