Educational Q&A

The verse underscores disciplined adherence to a vow (the thirteen-year term) before pursuing retributive justice. It also presents war as a morally charged act that must be framed within dharma—here symbolized by the yajña metaphor, implying responsibility, intention, and consequence rather than mere violence.

In the Vana Parva context, a message is being conveyed about the Pāṇḍavas’ resolve: once the thirteen years are completed, Yudhiṣṭhira will confront and overthrow the adversary in a war likened to a sacrificial session (raṇa-satra), with weapons as the blazing fire.
