Udyoga Parva, Adhyaya 2 — Baladeva’s Counsel on Peace, Restitution, and Court Protocol

sarvāsv avasthāsu ca te na kopyā grasto hi so 'rthabalam āśritais taiḥ | priyābhyupetasya yudhiṣṭhirasya dyūte prasaktasya hṛtaṃ ca rājyam ||

Educational Q&A

The verse advises political and ethical restraint: do not needlessly provoke a powerful opponent, and recognize that misfortune can arise from one’s own lapses—here, Yudhiṣṭhira’s attachment to gambling is acknowledged as a contributing cause to the loss of the kingdom.

Balarāma comments on the background of the conflict: the Kauravas hold the kingdom through strength and resources, and he notes that Yudhiṣṭhira’s involvement in the dice-game (dyūta) led to the kingdom being taken away, implying shared responsibility alongside Kaurava aggression.
